The First Handcart is Faith. The handcart pioneer story is a story of faith in God - faith on the part of those who pulled the handcarts, faith of those who died along the trail, faith of my ancestor John Linford and his wife Maria (pronounced Mariah) and their sons, faith of those great men who braved hardship to provide rescue to the stranded Willie and Martin handcart companies. I thought of naming my painting The Last Handcart. There is something about The First Handcart that rings true - first in faith in Christ, first in righteousness, first in courage, first in perseverance in the face of hardships.
