Description
Honoring Concord, California. Oil Painting. Concord California Oak 2 and
concord in the son
by richard w linford
i sing of 1772;
of captain pedro fages;
father juan crespi;
explorers to the core;
walking striding riding;
through this concord land;
its golden grass;
i sing of concord cali forn i a;
i lived there once;
i came to love the place;
the bonifacio road;
the willow pass;
still do;
i sing of loma vista junior high;
of mount diablo high school;
see those football games;
played over in my mind;
played under lights;
the danny devil mascot;
running round the field;
in contra costa county;
don francisco galindo;
married don salvio's daughter;
maria dolores Manuela;
in the galindo's wood frame home;
or somewhere else;
i think she did;
i think they did;
get married that is;
so say the history books;
agreeing with each other;
to live in concord peace;
no doubt there were a few;
yes several days of marital bliss;
at least;
some peace;
a kiss or more or two;
religious people;
catholics;
protestants;
latter-day saints;
i sing of great grand contra costa bedroom town;
amazing mount Diablo;
stand upon its top to see the world;
those pleasant golden hills;
all prone to burning fires from summer heat;
or lightning strike;
this oakland berkeley suburb fair;
near lafayette;
orinda too;
near walnut creek;
near Danville;
there;
i sing of you;
for you are great;
my concord town;
my cal i forn i a;
i honor you;
your oakland bay bridge span to san francisco;
cross the bay;
He paid the fare;
the fare we cannot pay;
along the way to san jose;
when driving south on 6 8 0;
or east to stockton;
hopefully no stocks;
consider concord's families first campaign;
this family friendly borough in the son;
one hundred thirty thousand strong or more;
and one yes i am one;
a one time concordite;
took flight;
yet once of concord;
always of concord;
'twas once a fledgling town;
called todos santos;
land grant country ranch;
its monte del Diablo;
named for some dense thicket dark;
once thought possessed by evil devilish men;
but now no more;
no gangs;
no bedlam in the night;
we hope;
tis exorcised;
'tis peace and light;
prosperity;
with some small tribelet chupcan bay miwok;
those early indian politics so incorrect;
they lived there first;
along the valley streams;
oak covered hills;
the green grass carpet makes one smile;
so green in winter;
hard to see or find one's way or make a mile;
through dense and foggy mist on certain days;
i kiss the hot and yellow hilltops;
baking in the summer son;
the elk the deer the antelope;
those salmon fish;
and yes i do confess some grizzlies too;
they walked about or played;
their 49er football games;
the charismatic joe montana;
standing in a pocket throwing straight;
for more than thirty thousand cheering yards;
but keep in mind tough steven young;
perhaps the greatest running back in NFL;
but you can vote;
a cross the bay not far away;
i sing of san Francisco fair;
just twenty miles against the sea or is it twenty nine;
whateer it is tis fine with me;
i sing of thirty one square miles of concord town;
i sing of easy access to it all t would seem;
those million traffic bumpers;
touching rush hour time;
the freeways packed or bart;
the oakland tunnel opening to the bay;
ive driven highway 5;
ive driven one o one;
Big Sur;
pacific coast;
john steinbecks cannery row;
in monterey;
the surfers surf;
the golden gate;
the seals;
the sandy beaches;
baking in the son;
along the coast;
i sing i smile;
while soaring over Cali forn i a Disney Land;
in Anaheim;
i even love L A;
i love bright santa cruz and monterrey;
and pebble beach;
i love those napa valley vineyards to the north;
the sacramento river steaming by;
so wide not dry by any stretch ;
the barges yachts;
too wide;
so scary wide;
a river stix perhaps;
tis not a river i am wont to cross;
or swim therein no fins no gills;
but maybe fish;
a sturgeon?
whale?
lost far upstream;
her calf?
a shark at stinson bay for sure;
at least those navy vessels war;
are moored Benicia town;
a row or motor boat canoe may swamp;
if try to cross that river broad;
or cross great waters farther to the west;
pacific to its deep and fearsome depths;
takes serious sort of craft;
a soul that's justified;
that's sanctified at best from sin;
and gin;
fernando built this new town in the son;
all saints its name;
yes todos santos fame;
in 1868;
with son-in-law;
francisco galindo;
its new name soon to be;
concord;
californ i a;
not pleasant hills;
not walnut creek;
not antioch;
not pittsburg;
not Martinez on the hill;
either;
i sing of concord town;
of high school;
hospital;
churches;
railroads;
library;
central plaza spot;
with cinemas two;
the rows and rows and rows and rows of houses;
orchards;
farms;
small ranches;
in the heat;
now swept away;
now lost from view;
the almond trees;
the walnut trees;
now most are gone;
all bulldozed down;
those rolling hills remain;
i spent my youth right there;
swimming in the chlorine pool;
in holbrook heights;
played second base;
played center field or right;
played softball under lights;
did often get on base;
i watched the one armed hart fairclough one night;
rob home run with bare hand;
the most amazing softball catch;
i've every seen or known in center field;
he reached beyond the fence;
one hand;
perhaps the greatest softball catch of all;
played high school plays;
for mr berman drama coach back then;
the rainmaker;
the lead;
young starbuck;
Lizzie Curry spinster was the other star;
a devastating drought;
the dying cattle;
promising of rain;
he came;
that starbucks;
to concord town;
for just one hundred dollars;
please;
i will give you rain;
he said;
twas stirring;
funny;
classic;
with an N;
to be precise;
N Richard Nash;
that is;
was oklahomas curley too;
and now Im bald;
about to take my yacht ride;
on the mighty sacramento;
bagging groceries as a boy;
Rod's market late;
mz couchman taught me english grammar lit;
and even punc tu ation just a bit;
had latin from Godchaux;
Im dated though you see;
so long ago;
just passing through;
to my reward;
like me like you;
i helped to build the mormon church;
in concord town;
i carried lumber for my dad;
the other carpenters;
were laymen too;
spending hours there;
at the building site;
for church;
for friendship;
for the Lord;
e'en walked the trusses high;
n'er thought i'd fall or die;
or dad;
or mom;
or bishop markham too;
i sat there in those hardened wooden pews;
not far from willow creek;
the road that is;
the perry ranch;
i watched old rancher walt;
break fifty thousand dollar quarter horses fine;
and not just one;
and haul his pure red Herefords round;
i cleaned walts augean stables shoveled poo;
his pure bred sheep a few;
i tromped walt's wool;
the sheeps' that is;
those narrow sacks;
i climbed down in;
all soaked with lanolin;
but then they struck another oil;
they did on walter's land;
and walt was old;
too late to spend the cash;
old walter died;
and that was that;
in concord town;
a universal sad reverse;
for came old walter's hearse;
his daughter penny got the golden oil;
i think;
old walt did leave it all behind;
like most of us;
like all of us to be precise;
we all will join with mount diablo high school crowd;
sing madrigals;
to God of love;
i took my high school tests;
he taught me math;
his name was mr westover;
geometry of life;
some algebra;
and that was that;
so do you think perhaps;
that movie star tom hanks;
who was born in concord town;
lives somewhere now in tony town;
pacific palisades;
behind some pearly gates;
no doubt;
or soon to be;
why I do think old tom is sleepless now;
or will be soon;
most every night;
for sure at noon;
on some posh house boat;
in seattle sleeping sound;
or voicing still his toy story sheriff woody;
in his dreams;
while flying with buzz lightyear to the sky;
or david brubeck's jazz piano note;
this quiet man of jazz;
once born in concord;
attended mt diablo high school too;
take five;
time out;
I think dave died at 91;
like you or I will die;
to bake there in the son;
in paradise;
in concord town.
