Description
The Legend of The Golden Duck. Lutek was a young shoemaker. Lutek's master shoemaker had not paid Lutek and so Lutek had no money. In fact, Lutek was a very good shoemaker. He wanted some funds so he could open his own shoe making shop and store. A man told Lutek that a Golden Duck lived in the basement of the nearby ancient Ostrogski Castle and guarded a treasure. One day Lutek went down into the basement to check out the story and there he saw a golden duck swimming in a pool of water. The golden duck turned into a gorgeous princess who handed Lutek a substantial sum of money and told him to spend the money only on himself. Should he spend the money on anyone else, it would disappear. Next day Lutek shopped until he dropped. He ate expensive meals. He hired a carriage and toured the city and countryside. He attended the theater. To his dismay, Lutek was able to spend but a small fraction of the money. Toward the end of the day Lutek met a hungry, poor beggar, and knowing how painful it is to be poor, without thought of the admonition from the gorgeous princess, Lutek gave money to the beggar whereupon the princess appeared to him and told him he would lose everything except the money he had given to the beggar. The beggar said, "Do not be concerned. You did not earn the money the princess gave you. You are a fine shoe maker. Through your hard work you will make much more money than the small amount you received from the princess. And so it was. Lutek lived many years. He got married to a beautiful girl who looked strikingly like the princess. They had many children and Lutek made a small fortune from his shoe business. The princess and Golden Duck of Ostrogski Castle were never seen again. Moral. You may, in fact you probably will, face tough times in your life. Notwithstanding, you can have many days of happiness with your family and by your hard work keeping in mind that there is great joy in giving as opposed to always receiving. Your happiness is in your family and in your good work including use of your mind and skills.
