Bombardment, Oil on Canvas. American Civil War Trivia. The Battle of Forts Jackson and St Philip in 1862 decided possessions of New Orleans during the American Civil War. Two Confederate forts were on the Mississippi River and were attacked by a Union Navy fleet. Ancient naval battle trivia: The first dateable recorded sea battle occurred about 1210 BC. Suppiluliuma II, king of the Hittites, defeated a fleet from Cyprus, burning their ships at sea. In the Battle of the Delta, Egyptians defeated Sea Peoples circa 1175 BC.
